Olivia Rodrigo SOUR (ALBUM)
Olivia Rodrigo’s debut album SOUR is a generational pop album that has soundtracked the heartbreak and resilience of Gen Z along the way to becoming one of the defining albums of 2021. It came in at number-one on Billboard’s 200 chart and has since been streamed over 6 billion times on Spotify, delivering several hit singles, including “drivers license,” “deja vu,” and “good 4 u." Cover artwork for SOUR was photographed by Grant Spanier. SOUR features 11 songs and runs 34 minutes and 36 seconds.
SOUR is a breakup album that chronicles Olivia’s experiences with heartbreak, anger and betrayal with honesty and vulnerability. The album was praised for its catchy melodies, Olivia’s powerful vocals, and its unflinching depiction of the teenage experience. It was also nominated for seven GRAMMY Awards, winning Best Pop Vocal Album.
Here are some reviews for SOUR from different sources:
Rolling Stone SOUR Review: “Just as “Deja Vu” and “Good 4 U” proved Rodrigo was going to be much more than a one-and-done phenom with a viral hit about careening through heartbreak, SOUR confirms this is just the start of her story, where she expertly rides the wave of teenage turbulence and emotional chaos down any road she chooses.” - Angie Martoccio
NME SOUR Review: “On her debut album, SOUR, the 18-year-old singer-songwriter puts herself forward as pop’s most promising new megastar – one with the talent, musical personality and smarts necessary to craft a long and illustrious career.” - Rhian Daly
The New York Times SOUR Review: “SOUR is an album about accepting alternate endings, and embracing who you become when you have to hot swap one idea about yourself for another all while keeping up a smile, or a career, or several.” - Jon Caramanica
Olivia Rodrigo recorded SOUR in Los Angeles (Amusement and Heavy Duty studios) and Salt Lake City (Funk studio). The primary producer and songwriter who worked with Olivia Rodrigo on SOUR was Dan Nigro, who won a Best Pop Vocal Album GRAMMY as producer and engineer for her debut album. Nigro co-wrote and produced most of SOUR’s songs. “1 step forward, 3 steps back” and “deja vu” were determined to be interpolations of Jack Antonoff and Taylor Swift’s songs “New Year’s Day” and “Cruel Summer,” so Jack, Taylor and St. Vincent (Annie Clark) were added as “writers” after the album’s release. Similarly, Olivia gave Paramore’s Hayley Williams and Josh Farro writing credits for “co-writing” her song “good 4 u.”
Other notable producers and songwriters who worked with Olivia Rodrigo on SOUR were Casey Smith (co-writer on “jealousy, jealousy”), Alexander 23 (co-producer on “good 4 u”) and Jam City (co-producer on “jealousy, jealousy”).
Olivia has also cited Alanis Morissette, Taylor Swift and Kacey Musgraves as the main influences on SOUR, so it is likely that their music also had an impact on the sound of the album.
